Match Report Courtesy Of Rangers Media Below:-

RANGERS’ under-19s warmed up for next week’s SFA Youth Cup final with Celtic with a narrow 1-0 loss to Hearts at Riccarton this afternoon.

Billy Kirkwood made four changes to the side beat Inverness by the same scoreline in its previous outing as he rotated his squad ahead of the big game at Hampden.

Kane HemmingsHis most notable introduction to the side was Kane Hemmings, who returned from a hamstring injury and played the first half before deliberately being taken off at the break.

The English striker had the visitors’ best opportunities during a match in which they found themselves defending for lengthy spells.

But after failing to take them, the Light Blues paid for that when they fell behind to the league’s second-placed team on the hour mark.

Striker Rob Ogleby scored the goal when he was set up by Billy King after a cross from the left by Jordan Morton.

Gers couldn’t hit back and that means they’ve lost four of their last five games and have won just once in their last six league outings after eight successive victories in all competitions.

But having beaten Celtic 4-2 at Barrowfield in November, they will still travel to the national stadium next midweek with confidence they can come out on top.

RANGERS: Drummond; McNeil, Hegarty, McAusland, McIntyre; Crawford, Fotheringham, Hunter, McCabe, Naismith (Marenghi); Hemmings (Kisuka).

Youths Lose At Riccarton

By elfideldo

Hearts 1 Rangers 0

Hearts kept their slim league hopes alive by edging out Rangers at Riccarton this afternoon. It was a game of few chances with the home side having the bulk of the pressure.

Almost half an hour had gone before we saw the first real chance of the game, David Smith released Kevin McHattie on the left And when his cross was headed up into the air by Chris Hegarty, Robert Ogilby challenged Wayne Drummond and the ball broke to Jordan Morton who volleyed over,

A minute later at the other end Kane Hemmings out muscled Jamie McCormack and just when it looked like he would get a shot on target McHattie cleared for a corner.

Half-Time:- Hearts o Rangers o

With an eye on Wednesday’s Youth Cup Final Rangers made two half-time substitutions, with Christiano Kisuka and Anthony Marenghi replacing, Kane Hemmings and Kal Naismith. Eight minutes after the break Drummond came to Rangers rescue, Smith sent Ogilby clear with the Rangers keeper coming off his line to block.

What proved to be the only goal of the game came on the hour markFraser Mullen’s cross from the left was knocked back across goal by Callum Patterson and Colin Hamilton was on hand to shoot past Drummond. Rangers missed a great chance to grab an equaliser three minutes from time, Marenghi’s corner from the right broke to Kyle McAusland four yards from goal but he missed kicked right in front of goal.

Hearts FC U19 vs Rangers FC U19 Friday 22nd April 2011

Hearts U19s cut the gap between themselves and league leaders Celtic to two points with a 1-0 win over Rangers at Riccarton this afternoon.

A big crowd looked on as skipper Colin Hamilton volleyed home his first goal of the season in the second half.

The defender’s strike was enough to give Darren Murray’s side all three points in what was a tight match.

The Wee Jambos must now hope that Celtic slip up against Motherwell tomorrow.

A defeat for the Parkhead club would set up a last day title decider on Saturday 30th April at Lennoxtown.

Rangers Fc U17 vs Raith rovers Sunday 17th April 2011 Match report courtesy of RFC Youths Blog below:-

On Sunday morning I took the opportunity to take in the Under 17′s Development League game at Murray Park against Raith Rovers.

The Kirkcaldy side were first to threaten after only four minutes, Blair Currie playing his first game for seven months after sustaining a leg break against St. Johnstone, got down at his right hand post to save a shot from the left hand angle of the penalty area. On fifteen minutes Darren Ramsay played the ball to Callum Gallagher on the right hand angle of the area and his shot took a deflection to beat the keeper.

Goal mouth incidents were the few and far between until a couple of minutes before the break. Raith had a corner on the left and it broke for the central defender inside the box, his first effort was blocked but the ball came straight back to him and he shot through a crowd of players past Currie. Rangers went straight to the other end and a Matty Clarke solo run took him past several defenders and deep into the penalty area where his shot came back of the post. The visitors then broke down the right and when the ball was cutback Currie had to look sharp to tip the effort on goal over.

Five minutes into the second-half  Sam McMahon went down under a challenge inside the box for a rather soft penalty, he stepped up to find the net despite the Raith keeper getting a hand to it. Just before the hour the keeper produced a fine save, Ramsay’s cross broke of McMahon to Marc Dyer at the edge of the box with the keeper diving to turn his shot wide.

On 65 minutes George Scott sent a cross in from the right which the defender headed up into the air, Lee Cochrane was on hand to volley past the keeper from just inside the box. Seven minutes later Sam George was called into action, stretching to turn a 35 yard free-kick over.

Two minutes later Andy Murdoch sent Charlie Telfer down the right, he went past the defender and hit the byline, his cutback giving Callum Wyllie a simple task of netting from close range. With the Raith Rovers youngsters tiring chances were coming at regular intervals, Scott played the ball inside and the keeper dived to deny Ramsay from the edge of the box.

A minute later the keeper produced a double save, first parrying from Wyllie, then denying Freddy Espling from the rebound.  The keeper contiuned to deny Rangers, saving from Wylie after the chance was setup by Scott.

As the game entered the last ten minutes he  turned a Wyllie free-kick wide and right at the end a move involving Adel Gafaiti and Telfer created a chance for Ramsay and once again the keeper thwarted the Rangers midfielder.

Rangers:- Blair Currie (GK), Sam George (GK), Craig Halkett, Matty Clarke, Adel Gafaiti, Jordan Wilson, Andy Murdoch, Darren Ramsay, Marc Dyer, Sam McMahon, Freddy Espling, Callum Gallagher, George Scott, Callum Wyllie, Lee Cochrane, Charlie Telfer.

Rangers FC U19 Lose Latest Old Firm Clash 0 – 3 April 12th 2011

Glasgow Rangers U19’s continued their losing run against old firm rivals Celtic FC U19’s Going down by 0 – 3 at their home ground Murray park.

This was a precursor to the Scottish youth cup final being staged at Hampden on the 27th of this month where Rangers need to find a lot of  heart and guts to turn the result around and to prevent Celtic lifting the trophy as they did in last years final.

Youths Poor Run Continues

By elfideldo

Rangers 0 Celtic 3

Rangers Under 19′s suffered their third consecutive league defeat at the hands of arch rivals Celtic at Murray Park this morning.  Two goals down after only thirteen minutes it became an uphill struggle that they never looked like over coming.

Celtic took the lead after only five minutes, Darren Cole lost out in an aerial challenge and when the ball landed at the edge of the penalty box Callum McGregor got there before Wayne Drummond to lob the Rangers keeper into the empty net. Eight minutes later the visitors scored again, with the Rangers defence all over the place in the early stages Tony Watt was allowed to twist and turn inside the box before shooting past Drummond.

Rangers were offering little in way of attack and their first effort of any note came on the half-hour, Gordon Dick’s corner from the right was cleared to the edge of the box where Robbie Crawford fired a powerful shot straight at Nick Feely.

Half-Time:-Rangers 0 Celtic 2

Six minutes after the break things got worse for the home side Watt got passed Crawford too easily on the right and his cross had Drummond flapping, he could only palm the ball straight to Patrick Twardzik who shot past the stranded keeper from around the penalty spot.

Celtic continued to control the game without really threatening to add to their tally. With Rangers only effort of note coming nine minutes from time, Kal Naismith controlling Crawford’s cross from the left on his chest at the edge of the box before shooting wide of Feely’s left hand post.

Rangers Media Match Report Courtsey Of Andrew Dickson

Robbie Crawford in action v Celtic at MP

By Andrew Dickson

RANGERS’ hopes of winning the under-19 SPL title back are all but over after they were beaten by Celtic at Murray Park.

Billy Kirkwood’s kids desperately needed to win the second Old Firm derby of the season to reignite their chances of claiming the championship.

Ewan McNeil in action v Celtic at MPInstead, however, it seems the Parkhead team is on course for the silverware after this result moved them to within a point of leaders Hearts.

Gers can only reach 48 points now and one win for the Jambos in their last two fixtures would move them on to a greater total.

Celtic still have four matches to play and given they have two more to complete than the Tynecastle side, they are favourites to come out on top.

From that point of view, the Light Blues’ focus is turning very quickly to the SFA Youth Cup final, a game they will play at Hampden against their city rivals on April 27.

They will need to lift themselves considerably for that one though after failing to reach the levels they showed earlier in the campaign when they won 4-2 at Barrowfield.

The home team went into this one without injured pair Kane Hemmings and Dylan McGeough and both were sorely missed.

With that said, Gers came forward first and after winning a corner, Christiano Kisuka might have scored when it came in from Robbie Crawford but Celtic scrambled away just in time.

The visitors responded by winning two such set pieces themselves but the second delivery was even worse than the first and neither came to anything.

Kyle McAusland had the first genuine chance of the game when he connected with

That miss proved costly as seconds later, with only four minutes on the clock, the Parkhead team took the lead.

Darren Cole went up for a high ball but couldn’t clear and when that gave Callum McGregor a chance to move in on goal, he lobbed Wayne Drummond to make it 1-0.

Kal Naismith in action v Celtic at MPTo their credit, Kirkwood’s youngsters didn’t let going behind affect them and they pressed forward-looking for a leveller.

The trouble was their final ball wasn’t always what it should have been and after a positive Andrew Mitchell run was brought to an end by a foul, Gordon Dick’s free kick was cleared.

Celtic looked dangerous when they came up field and when the Light Blues stood off them too much on 13 minutes, they doubled their advantage.

Tony Watt did well to twist and turn away from two men on the left before driving across Drummond and in but he should not have got the room he needed to make space for the shot.

The match continued to swing to and fro and the early goals apart, it was a relatively even contest in terms of possession and chances to score.

But in their desperation to get back into the game, Rangers resorted too often to playing long balls which, with a strong wind against them, did little to apply any pressure.

Eventually, with half an hour gone, Crawford had an opportunity to pull one back when Dick’s corner fell to him and it took a good save to deny him.

Sadly for Gers, that was as good as it got for them before the break and they went into the interval with a proverbial mountain to climb.

It wasn’t a great surprise to see Kamil Wiktorski introduced at the restart as Kirkwood looked to solidify in midfield. He replaced Robbie McIntyre, with Ewan McNeil on too for Mitchell.

The changes made little difference though and seven minutes into the second half it was 3-0 to Celtic.

Auxiliary left-back Crawford was given a torrid time on the flank as he was turned inside out but when the ball came in, Drummond should have coped with it well enough.

He chose to punch instead though and didn’t get a good enough connection on it, leaving Patrick Twardzik with the simple task of tapping in from close range.

With almost half the game still to go, it looked like there was no way back for Rangers and going further behind came at an added cost, with Dick going off injured.

From there, the tie took on the feel of a training game, with Celtic knowing they had it won and Gers unable to do much about it.

There were chances for both sides to change the score but the damage had been done and now Kirkwood must patch up his team and ensure it is ready for the final.

There are still league games to play, of course, against Inverness, Hearts and Hamilton between now and April 30.

Even so, few will disagree with the fact the most important thing at this stage is being successful in the club’s fifth consecutive SFA final two weeks tomorrow.

RANGERS: Drummond; McAusland, Hegarty, Cole, McIntyre (Wiktorski); Mitchell (McNeil), Dick (Hunter), McCabe, Crawford; Kisuka, Naismith.

Saints Grab Late Winner

By elfideldo

St.Mirren 2 Rangers 1

A goal in the final minute inflicted the second league defeat in a row for the Youth side at McKenna Park yesterday. It was also the second game where they failed to hold on to a half-time lead.

The game got off to a slow start and it wasn’t until the twentieth minute when we saw the first attempt at goal, Josh Horne breaking forward from full-back and shooting past the far post. Three minutes later Joel Kasabundi broke down the right and pass inside saw Craig Slater turn and shoot wide.

Five minutes later Rangers had their first shot at goal when Robbie Crawford passed inside to Adam Hunter who’s shot from 25 yards went wide. Just before the half-hour the home side had a chance from a free-kick just outside the box, Graeme Ramage powerful shot was parried by Wayne Drummond.  On 33 minutes it was a free-kick at the other end which Kal Naismith fired wide from 25 yards.

Seven minutes before the break Rangers were gifted the lead, Dominic Kennedy’s pass back was mis-controlled by keeper Adam McHugh and Rhys McCabe had the simple task to roll the ball home. Just before the break Andy Mitchell was fouled just outside the box and McHugh dived to his right to divert Naismith’s effort from the free-kick for a corner.

Half Time:- St.Mirren 0 Rangers 1

The home side came close to equalising  straight after the break, Ramage’s corner from the right broke to Jason Naismith inside the box and his shot came back of Drummond’s left hand post. Rangers replied when Naismith got a flick on to a Drummond clearance and McCabe’s shot was just too high.

Just before the hour good work on the left by Mark Lamont saw Bradley Coyne beat Drmmond to his cross and head narrowly over. The homes side grabbed an equalizer on 67 minutes, Mark Lamontcutting in from the right and shooting past Drummond from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes later a superb block from McHugh prevented Rangers regaining their lead, good work on the right hand byline by Sam McMahon and a great cross on to the head of Naismith looked certain to produce a goal until McHugh blocked with his legs at point-blank range. Rangers were to rue that miss in the final minute, Coyne robbed Kamil Wiktorski near the corner flag on the left and passed inside to Tom Reilly, who fed Graeme Ramageinside the box and he sidestepped a defender to shoot past Drummond.

19’s Suffer Another Blow

Adam Hunter

RANGERS under-19s’ hopes of regaining the SPL title took another dent when they suffered a second straight loss for the first time this season.

Kyle McAuslandThe youngsters had lost just once all season but a 2-1 defeat to St Mirren is their second reverse in just five days, leaving their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Billy Kirkwood’s side were looking for the right response to their 4-1 loss against Hearts on Friday and it looked like they were on the right track with a half time lead.

But Rhys McCabe’s opener was cancelled out by Mark Lamont before Graeme Ramage swept home a late winner to consign Kirky’s kids to defeat.

The opening half was scrappy and played in poor conditions that led to neither side taking a real grip of the game.

Rangers were enjoying some decent possession down their right flank with Kyle McAusland getting forward well from right back.

But all too often when they were in the last third they failed to find a killer final ball, with Adam Hunter drifting a free kick beyond the advanced Gers defenders and Andrew Mitchell also over hitting a cross.

Saints had been restricted to a couple of long-range efforts that failed to trouble Wayne Drummond before the Rangers keeper was called in to action on the half hour.

The home side won a free kick on the edge of the area and Ramage’s stinging effort was palmed away well by the Northern Irishman.

Kal Naismith was next up to try his luck from a set piece as he drifted a decent left foot effort just wide of the upright.

He was then denied minutes before half time by a decent stop from the Saints keeper, but not before the shot-stopper had cost his side the first goal.

Kal NaismithThe Saints No.1 had what looked like a routine clearance to make, but he made a real hash of it and left McCabe with the simplest of tasks to prod in to an empty net.

That might have set the Light Blues on their way and despite a fine reaction save from Drummond in the opening minute of the second period it was the visitors who started the stronger.

Just minutes in to the half Naismith should have released McCabe for his chance of a second, but the forward opted instead to shoot and it proved to be a poor choice.

McCabe did find some space in possession after 53 minutes but a decent left foot hit was just a little too high to trouble the goalkeeper.

From that point Saints came back in to things and they earned a deserved equalizer through Lamont in the 67th minute. It was a tidy finish from the midfielder and set Rangers on the back foot, with the home side sensing the chance for victory.

The visitors might have grabbed back the initiative however when substitute Sam McMahon delivered well for Naismith, only for the forward’s header to be expertly stopped by the keeper, redeeming himself for his earlier mistake.

And it would prove a crucial intervention when Saints made the most of their best chance in the final minute.

Rangers might have cleared the ball before it made it to Ramage, but when the forward collected it from the left he cut in well and drilled beyond Drummond.

Rangers: Drummond; McAusland, Hegarty, Wiktorski, McIntyre; Dick, Hunter (Marenghi), Mitchell (McMahon), Crawford; McCabe; Naismith.

Second Half Collapse Dents League Hopes

A poor second half proved costly for Rangers Under 19′s at Murray park this afternoon, the win was enough to take their opponents to the top of the league. With both Kane Hemmings and Kal Naismith out injured the attacking burden was with  Christino Kisuka supported by Dylan McGeough.

The early chance came for the visitor’s after only two minutes and Wayne Drummond had to  stretch to tip Denis Prychenko’s free kick over the bar. Rangers then took the lead with their first attack five minutes later, Gordon Dick out on the right passed inside to Dylan McGeough who side-stepped a defender before shooting past Jack Hamilton from the edge of the box.

Dylan McGeough Glasgow Rangers FC

Hearts replied when Robert Ogilby broke from halfway and had an effort from just outside the box which Drummond saved comfortably. Midway through the half Rhys McCabe tried his luck from all of thirty yards which Jack Hamilton gathered at the second attempt.

Five minutes later and another long-range effort from Kamil Wiktorski had Jack Hamilton scrambling to turn the ball round his right hand post. The home side immediately had to make a change when McGeough limped off to be replaced by Ewan McNeil.

Ten minutes before the break Gordon Dick tested Jack Hamilton from a free-kick wide on the right which the Hearts keeper tipped over.

Two minutes later the Edinburgh side missed a great chance, Fraser Mullen and Jamie Walker combined on the right to send Mullen to the byline, the fullback’s cross was controlled on his chest by Ogilby and just when he looked likely to score he knocked the ball over the bar. Right on half-time Walker went past Steven Hetherington and hit the byline, His low cross was met by Ogilby at the near post but went just wide.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 Hearts 0

Within four minutes of the restart Rangers found themselves behind, three minutes in David Smith sent the ball into the box from the left and Jason Holt had time to control the ball, turn and shoot past Drummond. A minute later Colin Hamilton rose to head a corner from the right goalwards, it appeared to be going just wide but it was handled by Hetherington at the far post, it was a clear penalty and a red card for the Rangers defender, Denis Prychenenko made no mistake from the spot.

Rangers were now up against it and only a fine save low to his right from Drummond denied Walker after Ogilby had laid the ball back into his path. Midway through the second half Hearts increased their lead, the ball was worked to Denis Prychenenkoat the edge of the box and he sent an unstoppable shot high past Drummond.

Five minutes later following a free-kick to Rangers a quick break forward saw Jason Holt break from his own half, he evaded Kyle McAusland’s challenge to go on and fire past Drummond. It could have been worse two minutes later, Walker cut in from the right, his shot was parried by Drummond straight to Ogibly who screwed his shot wide.

The home side had created little after going down to ten men, with nine minutes left of the clock Sam McMahon got his head to Adam Hunter’s free-kick from the right which Jack Hamilton saved comfortably.

Youths Progress To Fifth Consecutive Final

By elfideldo

Rangers 1 Hibernian 0

Chris Hegarty’s first half strike was enough to take Rangers under 19′s to their fifth consecutive Youth Cup Final in a close encounter at Ibrox this afternoon.

Rangers took the lead with what was the first real chance of the match in the thirteenth minute. A corner from the right was headed back across goalby Darrebn Cole and his central defensive partnerChris Hegarty was on hand to volley past Callum Artell from the edge of the six yard box. Three minutes later a powerful run down the right by Christiano Kisuka saw him go past a defender and into the box before shooting straight at Artell.

The visitors replied  when Lewis Horner’s shot from arround 25 yards was just wide of Wayne Drummond’s left hand post. Midway through the half David Crawford and Ross Caldwell combined to set up a shooting chance for Danny Handling inside the box and he was denied by a great Cole block at the expense of a corner.

Right on the half-time whistle Rangers broke forward through Rhys McCabe,  he linked with Dylan McGeough to set up a 25 yarder from Gordon Dick that Artell tipped over.

Half-Time:- Rangers 1 Hibernian 0

Five minutes after the break Artel was scrambling across goal and was relieved to see Kamil Wiktorski’s 25 yard effort deflect narrowly wide of his left hand post. Two minutes later Hibs worked the ball out to Callum Burns on the right and Drummond did well to gather his low cross into the box.

The visitors created another chance just before the hour mark Dean Horribine combined with Caldwell to feed Crawford on the right hand side of the box and his shot flashed across goal and wide. On the hour mark Rangers should have doubled their lead, a quick break saw McGeough pass to McCabe who’s run took him towards the Hibs box, a superb reverse pass sent Kal Naismith clear to go round Artell, but the angle was too tight and his shot went across goal and wide.

With just under twenty minutes on the clock Hibs had their best chance, Burns cross from the right was headed down by Horrobine inside the box to Crawford with Hegarty blocking his shot as it looked net bound.  A couple of minutes later McCabe’s pass inside from the left found Ewan McNeil and his shot from distance was scooped wide by Artell.

With seven minutes remaining Rangers looked certain to make the game safe, Kyle McAusland and Naismith combined on the right and when McAusland’s low cross found Robbie Crawford right in front of goal he seemed certain to score but Artell somehow got a touch to divert the ball wide. Rangers saw out the final minutes to book a Hampden date with the winners o tomorrow’s Semi-Final between Celtic and Livingston.

BILLY KIRKWOOD’S under-19s edged the club in to its fifth consecutive SFA Youth Cup final thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Hibs at Ibrox.

Billy Kirkwood at youth cup semi finalChris Hegarty’s first half finish was enough to see the youngsters in to the final after a game they could have won more comfortably.

Hibs threatened on occasion but Rangers had the better chances with Kal Naismith guilty of missing the best of those having rounded the keeper in the second half.

Substitute Robbie Crawford was denied late on by a fine save from Hibs keeper Calum Antell and both sides had claims for penalties for handball.

Hibs started proceedings well but after an energetic first few minutes from the visitors it was the Light Blues that established themselves.

Kal Naismith made the first of the positive runs that had the Hibs defence looking a little shaky, but the talented forward should have opted for the pass rather than trying to beat another defender.

Minutes later Dylan McGeouch tried to show him how it should have been done when he too burst forward from midfield and looked to slip in Christiano Kisuka.

His cute reverse pass was cut out but the tone had been set and the home side were on the front foot now.

And with a little under a quarter of an hour gone it was Chris Hegarty who applied the finishing touch to establish a lead.

Billy Kirkwood at youth cup semi final

Darren Cole rose highest in the box to head a corner back across the box to his fellow central defender, who produced a composed finish, lashing the ball beyond Calum Antell.

Chris Hegarty celebrates his winning goalIt was a great moment for the young defender, who has been ever present for the under-19s this term, playing for the first time at Ibrox.

That had given Rangers a taste and Rhys McCabe was next to try his luck from distance, but it was comfortably held by Antell.

The Hibs keeper was a busy man in the visitors’ goal, as he again rushed out to clear from Kisuka after the forward burst clear on the right, only for a heavy touch to open the door to the goalie to block.

It wasn’t all Rangers though with Hibs trying their luck too, but mostly restricted to efforts from distance.

On the twenty minute mark their small band of travelling fans thought they were back in it when one attempt whistled low past Wayne Drummond’s post.

With both sides settling in to the occasion the game lost a little of its momentum midway through the half and it took a reshuffle from Kirkwood to get things going again.

Kisuka was pushed out wide on to the right hand side, allowing Naismith and McGeouch to move further forward and try to do some damage around the box.

With five minutes of the half remaining they did that well with the result a Naismith effort that curled just beyond the post.

The pressure on the Hibs was building again and shortly after McCabe dragged a shot wide of the same post.

Kal NaismithThe best attempt though came in the final minute of the half as Gordon Dick found some space on the edge of the area and sent a fine effort toward goal.

The ball moved in the air and Antell did well to readjust and palm it over the top for a corner that Rangers could do nothing with before the whistle blew for half time.

Rangers started more brightly in the second period than they had in the first with Naismith lively in the early stages.

His burst down the right saw him cut inside and shoot over the top as the Light Blues looked to kill the game off early.

That wasn’t to be though as Kamil Wiktorski then saw an effort deflected wide for a corner when the ball broke to him twenty yards out.

Hibs threatened on a couple of occasions down their right flank as McGeouch and McCabe failed to sort out who was picking up the forward runners.

But Rangers were more threatening when they moved forward and should have given themselves a cushion on the hour mark.

McGeouch collected the ball deep in his own half and moved it on to McCabe whose pass was perfectly weighted for Naismith.

The forward’s first touch took him beyond Antell, but he travelled a little too far wide and when he cut the ball back toward the empty goal he rolled it just beyond the far post.

Kirkwood’s side had to rely on Hegarty at the opposite end shortly after when he came to the rescue to block Hibs’ best chance of the game.

Rangers should then have been presented the chance to kill the game as a contest when a huge claim for handball was ignored with fifteen minutes to go.

It looked like they might pay for missing chances in the late stages when Hibs poured forward looking for an equaliser, but some fine defending from Darren Cole denied the visitors with just eight minutes remaining.

A minute later it looked like Rangers had sealed things when Kyle McAusland collected a pass from Naismith on the right and picked out Crawford in the middle.

His effort was cushioned toward goal, but somehow Antell got down well to force it round the post for a corner.

And the home fans breathed a huge sigh of relief minutes later when Hibs had their own claim for a spot kick when Cole turned the ball behind for a corner – the visiting players claiming he used his arm to deflect their shot.

That was the visitors’ last real opportunity and Rangers did enough to set up a Hampden final against either Celtic or Livingston.

Scottish FA Youth Cup Semi-Final
Rangers 1 Hibernian 0
Saturday 26 March 2011

Despite a brave performance at Ibrox Stadium this afternoon Hibernian were defeated by Rangers at the Semi Final stage of the Scottish FA Youth Cup.

James McDonaugh’s team more than matched league leaders Rangers throughout an open and exciting encounter, but were undone by an early set piece.

Rangers’ defender Chris Hegarty grabbed the only goal of the game when he pounced on a knock down inside Hibernian’s penalty area.

The defeat was desperately hard for the Hibernian youngsters to take and they deserve a lot of plaudits for their gutsy performance.

The young team in green created numerous chances, but they were denied by a combination of strong defending and off-key finishing.

Rangers FC U19 vs Hibs U19 SYC Semi Final March 26th 2011

A big, noisy crowd packed into the lower level of the Main Stand as the teams made their way onto the Ibrox turf.

Neither side seized control during the early stages with the battle for midfield supremecy being fought.

But against the run of play the home side opened the scoring on 12 minutes when Darren Cole nodded down a corner kick from Gordon Dick to Hegarty and the defender dispatched it high into the net.

Hibernian were unlucky to find themselves trailing having started brightly but they set about finding an equaliser with resolute determination.

Scott Smith, Lewis Horner and David Crawford all had strikes from the edge of the Rangers penalty area, although none brought a save from Wayne Drummond in the goal.

Ross Caldwell then went agonisingly close to a deserved leveller with a fine strike from 18 yards but with Drummond beaten the ball was inches past the post.

Despite finding themselves a goal down Hibernian were the better side however Rangers remained a potent threat on the counter attack.

The direct running of striker Christiano Kisuka was causing Jordan Forster and Jack Verth a headache or two and he tested Callum Antell.

In the final minute of the first half Hibernian had to rely on a fine save from Antell to prevent a rasping long-range drive from Gordon Dick from finding the net.

A powerful drive from Kamil Wiktorski was bravely blocked by Forster as Rangers started the second period on the front foot.

With the match on a knife’s edge, play raged from end-to-end and next to threaten was Horner but his shot was comfortably held by Drummond.

Just before the hour mark a fantastic turn and shot from Crawford flashed across the face of the Rangers goal and was desperately unlucky not to find the net.

On the counter attack Kal Naismith burst clear before rounding Antell however with an open goal at his mercy he screwed the ball wide of the far post on the angle.

With 18 minutes remaining Horner was denied what appeared a sure equaliser by Darren Cole on the goal line as the pressure on the Rangers’s defence grew.

Rangers substitute McNeil almost caught out Antell with a long range drive that bounced just in front of the goalkeeper, however the shot stopper did well to push it around the post for a corner kick.

The Glasgow side should have secured the win when Kyle McAusland’s cross picked out the unmarked Robbie Crawford but he was denied by a brilliant point-blank save from Antell.

In time added on Forster, who had by this time been pushed up front, had a header saved by Drummond as Rangers held on to secure victory.

Rangers: Drummond, McAusland, Hetherington, Cole, Hegarty (Mitchell 77′), Wiktorski, Dick, McCabe, Kisuka (McNeil 67′), Naismith, McGeouch (Crawford 69′).Subs: McNeil, Mitchell, Hunter, Inglis, Crawford.

EWAN McNEIL grew up as a Rangers fan watching them win trophies at Hampden and was thrilled to see them do it yet again at the weekend.

Now he hopes to give himself the chance to follow in the footsteps of Walter Smith’s first team by clinching a place in this season’s SFA Youth Cup final on Saturday.

Billy KirkwoodGers’ under-19 side takes on Hibs in the last four of the competition at Ibrox, with boss Billy Kirkwood looking to take his side into the concluding game for the fifth consecutive season.

Progression to that stage is far from assured though against the team which beat the Murray Park kids to the trophy two years ago.

The sides drew 1-1 at Auchenhowie earlier in the season and while the Light Blues then won 4-1 in Edinburgh, it wasn’t until the last 10 minutes of that game they sealed their victory.

Another tight contest is expected three days from now but Houston lad McNeil admits he’s desperate to seal a trip to the national stadium next month.

The winners of Saturday’s game will meet either Livingston or Celtic in the final of the tournament.

McNeil said: “We’ve been on a good run so far in the competition and hopefully we can get another good result this weekend.

“Since we came back from our training camp in Turkey in January, we haven’t lost and had won every single game up to the weekend there.

“That’s a good run we want to keep up because we’ve been happy overall with the way things have been going.

“We’ve got two strikers in good shape up front in Kane (Hemmings) and Kal (Naismith) and they are scoring most weeks for us just now.

“Now we need to carry things into this game now as it would be great to get back to the final again.

“I wasn’t involved in our final with Celtic last year but I played in two Glasgow Cup finals against them and they were huge games themselves.

“Even though they were at Broadwood and there weren’t huge crowds, they were still very special occasions and getting to Hampden would be a step up again.

“I have grown up as a Rangers fan so I’ve obviously seen the team winning big finals there in the past and I’d love to win something with the club at the ground too.”

Rangers play Hibernian on Saturday at 2pm, with gates opening at 12.30pm, and admission costs £4 for adults and £1 for juveniles.

Season ticket holders get in for free on production of their smartcards and fans will be house in the Bill Struth Main Stand enclosures…

Rangers News – A Proud Moment For Chris Heggarty Rangers FC U19 Player

UNDER-19 defender Chris Hegarty admits that playing against Hibs at Ibrox tomorrow will be a dream come true, especially as all his family and friends from Northern Ireland are coming over to watch him in action.

The Dungannon-born youngster can’t wait to run down the famous tunnel on to the hallowed turf but knows it will only be a special day if he is on the winning side..

Chris Hegarty Rangers FC U19 Player March 26th 2011

Having beaten Deveronvale, Hamilton Accies and Ayr United in previous rounds Billy Kirkwood’s team must now defeat the Hibees to book a place in the Hampden final against either Celtic or Livingston.

Hegarty is confident going in to the big match and enjoyed getting the chance to walk around the stadium yesterday and to get a taste of what is to come.

He said: “I can’t wait to play at the stadium. My family are all coming over so it will be a very proud moment for me.

“I’m just hoping we can do well and have a good game.

“Playing at Ibrox on Saturday will be different but it’s something you just have to put down as an experience.

“We’ve got to go out and treat it like any other game although the pitch looks massive compared to the one at Murray Park.

“But in reality they are both the same size so we just have to go out and try to get a result.

“Getting to walk around the stadium and stand on the pitch has definitely helped because a few of the boys in the squad have not been to Ibrox that often.

So it has given everyone a feel for the place and we will know what to expect on Saturday.”

Hegarty is desperate to make it through to the final and would love to face Old Firm rivals Celtic at the national stadium.

He said; “I want to win the league and the cup but getting to Hampden to play in a final would be a big thing…

“10,000 fans or whatever have turned up to watch those games in the past so it would be a great experience and, hopefully, if we progress we can take on Celtic in the final and get our hands on the silverware.

“That would be great.”

Midfielder Rhys McCabe, from Livingston, was part of the under-19 side that lost in the final to Celtic last year and wants to erase that memory in the next couple of months.

He said: “It was a bit disappointing for the lads to get all the way to the final and lose.

“Hopefully we can get past our semi-final against Hibs on Saturday and rectify that but we know they are a good side and it will be tough.

“They play attractive football and get the ball down so that will suit us as well.

“Hopefully it will be an entertaining game and we can get a victory.”

Rhys admits that seeing former under-19 stars Gregg Wylde and Kyle Hutton lift the League Cup on Sunday gave everyone in the youth department a huge lift.

He added: “It’s great to see those boys do so well.

“Last season Gregg was aregular in our under-19s and to see him play against PSV and then Celtic was fantastic.

“Everyone at the training ground likes to see the young lads do well and hopefully we can do the same.”

Youth Cup Semi Final Preview: Rangers vs. Hibs – Rangers Media

Billy Kirkwood’s under 19′s take on Hibernian at Ibrox on Saturday in the Scottish Youth Cup Semi Final. The Ibrox youngsters are aiming to make it to their fifth consecutive final, having won the trophy in 2007 and 2008 with victories of Celtic in both finals.

Where as Rangers will go into this game as favourites it will not be an easy match as this season’s league meetings have been close. The first game at Murray Park in October ended in a 1-1 draw, in a game Rangers dominated they fell behind to a freak free-kick from Scott Smith and the now departed Max Wright equalised in the second half.

In the recent meeting at Hibs Training Centre the young Gers ran out 4-1 winners, although the game was closer than the scoreline suggests. Two of Kal Naismith‘s goals in his hat-trick coming in the final ten minutes. Rangers opener that day came from Christiano Kisuka with Callum Burns levelling for the Easter Road side.

So who are you likley to see if you go along on Saturday ? In recent weeks Gary Inglis has been between the sticks, Gary started the season as third choice but with injuries to Wayne Drummond and Alan Smith, Gary grabbed his chance. With first choice Wayne Drummond fit again there is a decision to be made there.

The likely back four will be Kyle McAusland, Chris Hegarty, Darren Cole & Robbie McIntyre. The most familiar to the supporters is of course Darren Cole, who made his first team debut in Turkey. A regular at centre-back for the youths he has formed a good partnership with Northern Irish youth international Chris Hegarty. Chris joined in the summer from Millwall, not the biggest central defender I have been impressed with his distribution from the back.

Kyle came to the club as a striker from Ayr United and has grown into the full-back role this season. Left-back Robbie has made great progress, last season he was playing boys club football with Tynecastle Boys Club. Not only has he pushed into the youth team, he has also established himself in the Scotland under 17′s.

Kamil Wiktorski, Rhys McCabe, Dylan McGeough and Gordon Dick are probably going to make up the midfield. One drawback is that they all would prefer to play central. Polish youth international Kamil is likely to be the more defensive of the four and will be joined by one of the others in the middle, with the other two being expected to provide width.

There has been much speculation over Dylan McGeough, who is arguably the best player at this level in the country. At the moment he is still a Rangers player and may see that this would be the best place to develop his career. Rhys has just signed a new two year contract and has been a regular for a few years now, his incredible “Tim Cahill” type spring makes him a threat in the air. Gordon has been in and out the side, but seems to have established himself in recent weeks in the side and provides drive from midfield.

Up front would almost certainly be Kal Naismith and Kane Hemmings, but Kane appeared to pull a hamstring at the weekend and must be a doubt. Both have been performing at the top of their game in recent weeks. Kane has power, pace and goals, while Kal is either sublime or frustrating. A real talent but sometimes he has his own ideas on how to play. If Kane doesn’t make it his likely replacement would be Christiano Kisuka, it depends which Christiano turns up, unplayable against Celtic or subbed at half-time against Aberdeen.

Others that could feature are Northern Irish midfielder Andy Mitchell and fellow midfielder Robbie Crawford. Adam Hunter, Ewan McNeil and Steven Hetherington who are comfortbale in either defence or midfield and Anthony Marenghi who can play up front or in midfield.

Players to look out for in the visitors side include defender and captain Scott Smith who has been a regular at youth international level. Striker Ross Caldwell is another who has been called into the Scotland under 19 setup. At the younger level Danny Handling has been recognised at under 17′s.

In recent seasons Hibs have had an informal tie with the famous North East England side Wallsend Boys Club, and Lewis Horner is the latest recruit from that source. Central defender Jordan Forster was previously with Celtic.

In the recent game full-back Callum Burns and midfielders Harry Monaghan and Dean Horrobine also impressed.

Scott Smith And Ross Caldwell Hibs FC U19's Players Up For The Youth Cup

Scott Smith and Ross Caldwell both believe Hibernian under-19s have got a great chance of progressing through to the Scottish Youth Cup Final; starting with winning tomorrow’s semi-final tie against Rangers at Ibrox (26 March, kick off 2pm).

So far the young team in green have already defeated Brora Rangers, Hearts and Falkirk before reaching the last four in the competition and captain Smith says they are confident of keeping the Cup run going in Govan.

Speaking exclusively to Hibernian TV, Smith, pictured left, said: “I think we’ve got to be confident going into the game. I think we’ve got a good group of boys – we’re all confident players and we’ll help each other through.

“It is going to be a big task on a big stage at Ibrox, but we’re looking forward to it. We want to go there, put in a good performance and hopefully the result will come with that.

“All the boys want to get to Hampden and hopefully we can get one step further. We took the game to Hearts at Tynecastle two rounds ago, so we’ll be looking to do the same on Saturday.”

Striker Caldwell scored the winner to beat Hearts in the fourth round and the talented forward says he would love to repeat the feat against Rangers.

He added: “I’m just hoping to score another goal and help the team through. At Tynecastle, I got a lot of help – Marc Lancaster put it on a plate for me and I just put in the goal.

“Since we last played Rangers a couple of weeks ago, we’ve learned a lot about how they play and their starting team. We’ll go there, be confident and hopefully take a step into the final.”

A very small and narrow pitch prevented the Lads from playing passing football with St Johnstone choosing to punt the ball from long distances. Despite the draw and the park conditions the Rangers boys had a number of decent chances to take all three points but could not capitalise on these.

St.Johnstone 1 Rangers 1

Rangers Youth dropped two vital points against St.Johnstone at Tulloch Park this afternoon, the tight bumpy pitch meant it was never going to be a game of silky football and the home side matched Rangers in a battle for a share of the points.

Yet Rangers got off to perfect start when they were gifted a goal after only two minutes, Mark Durnan’s pass back gave Zander Clark problems on the bumpy pitch and the keeper’s fresh air swipe saw the ball roll into the empty net. Five minutes later the home side had their first opportunity, Clark’s long clearance which were to give Rangers problems in the first-half wasn’t dealt with by the defence and Stephen Reynonlds volleyed wide.

Just after the quarter-hour mark Kane Hemmings went past Durnan on the halfway line and broke into the box, with Dylan McGeough and Kal Naismith in the middle the striker shot across goal. The home side replied eight minutes later when Ryan Hutchinson’s effort from the edge of the box was narrowly wide.

Rangers then  missed a glorious chance just after the half-hour, Robbie McIntyre’s throw was flicked on by Naismith and Kane Hemmings was clear inside the penalty area but his shot was straight and keeper Clark who blocked with his legs. A couple of minutes before the break good play on the right between Rhys McCabe and Kane Hemmings  created a crossing opportunity for the later to find Naismith arriving inside the box,  but could only knock it straight at Clark.

Right on the stroke of half-time the home side grabbed a leveler, Scott Gray’s free-kick from the left found Jack Clisby unmarked and his header looped over Gary Inglis into the net.

Half Time:- St.Johnstone 1 Rangers 1

The second half started  as battle for supremacy with ball spending most time up in the air as the surface made retaining possession difficult and it was twenty minutes before any goal was threatened. Hemmings cutting in from the right and his deflected shot looped towards the back post where McCabe leapt to head across goal and just wide. Rangers were then dealt their second injury blow when Hemmings pulled up with a hamstring injury and joined McGeough on the sidelines who was replaced five minutes earlier. Substitute Christiano Kisuka was involved immediately when he played Andy Mitchell’s throw in back to him and the Ulsterman’s cross found McCabe arrive at full stretch but he could only knock the ball just over.

Rangers next effort tested Clark when Naismith shot from the edge of the box and the keeper dived to his left to parry then gather. The home side were not out of it and when Reynolds crossed from the right Clisby had a chance but volleyed well wide. Then with only four minutes remaining Rikki McIntosh broke into the box and shot across goal.

Rangers almost grabbed a winner in the final minute, a great run across on the right from Ewan McNeill was met by the on rushing Naismith with keeper Clark in the right place to keep the ball out without knowing too much about it.

Full-Time:- St.Johnstone 1 Rangers 1
